Bulls, Music & More with Country, Employee Q&A
Amy Hicks • August 28, 2020

In the peak season, Flora-Bama has anywhere from 400-500 employees who work to make sure the good times keep going and our patrons are well taken care of. Each employee is essential to the daily business that takes place from sunrise to well after it sets. Whether that be working retail in the gift shop, serving food at one of our three restaurants, or even the more hidden job of making bushwhackers, they all serve in such a unique way that makes this well oiled machine, aka the last American Roadhouse, run very smooth. No matter what day of time you visit, you are bound to see a group of our staff who proudly wear a bright yellow shirt. Also known as our Customer Service staff, these guys and gals, are on the front and back lines of our business ensuring the bars are stocked, communication is flowing between each room and most importantly that are customers are in a good place to have a great time!
In the recent years, one employee in particular has received rave reviews and quite an amount of attention for providing awesome customer service. May we introduce, County! Country is a long time employee of the Flora-Bama and we wanted to do a Q&A so you can get to know him a little better as well.
Q:
First thing first, is that your real name or a nick-name?
A:
Country is my real legal name and well, I think it fits me great!
(insert pic of Country)
Q:
What do you do here at the Flora-Bama?
A:
I am known as the Flora-Bama Ambassador. And while that involves a number of tasks, I make sure our team is getting the assistance they need, interfacing with customers daily, giving tours and providing safety to those coming and going in the wee hours and also, making sure the Marina docks stay fished ; )
Q:
Just how long have you been with the Flora-Bama?
A: I've worked here for a little over 3 years. I began working in the Flora-Bama Oyster Bar and
then transitioned to customer service.
Q:
If you had to pick your favorite meal or dish from any of the Flora-Bama restaurants,
what would it be?
A:
Chicken Ponchatrain from the Flora-Bama Yacht Club.
Q:
What about your favorite Flora-Bama musician or band?
A:
Well, for starters, Justin Jeansonne & Jacob Hall (I’m going to miss him so much), Bruce Smelley. Truth is. I've come to love them all! River Dan aka "little brother", Al & Kathy, Ryan Dyer, even Sam the Bingo Man. I wasn’t aware of his music until I started working at the Flora-Bama. Thanks to all of the artists that play here for being so generous to share their time with me. It has provided me with the opportunity to share more insights with our customers.
Side note, I've actually been learning to play a left handed fiddle. Which Thomas Jenkins has been giving me lessons and I love it!
Q:
As you know, Flora-Bama has a lot of traditions. Do you have a favorite?
A:
That's easy- BULLS ON THE BEACH BABY! Truth is, it's the only one I personally get goosebumps over. The smell of turnt earth and livestock. The sounds of the pin rattling, the bulls grunting, the vibration under your feet when 1800lbs plus kicks up the dirt or bucks at another bull to make room. And all that happens before the National Anthem even takes place. It's my favorite!
Q:
Since you do talk to the public a lot, what do you feel inclined to share that they may not know?
A:
If you want a good look at our musicians and Bulls on the Beach, we do have a Youtube Channel
where I sometimes make a feature as well. Here’s the link and make sure to ask for Country the next time you visit the Flora-Bama.
We hope you enjoyed getting to know one of the many Flora-Bama employees!
